The public boat ramp at the end of Lakeshore Drive just outside Eagle Harbor has plenty of parking and restrooms and a community dock for all Fleming Island residents.
Fleming Island was settled in the late 1700s by George Fleming, and the chapel his daughter, Margaret built, is still standing on Old Church Road in the southeastern area of Fleming Island. The Fleming home, named Hibernia from George Fleming’s native Ireland, was still standing until the 1970s, and the last parcel belonging to the family was not sold until the 1980s. A drive down Old Church Road off Hibernia Road will take you back into Old Florida.
Fleming Island’s A-rated Schools are at the top in the State of Florida. Clay County was named to the elite group of 13 Academically High Performing School Districts in the State. Fleming Island Elementary is one of a handful of Blue Ribbon Schools in Northeast Florida, and Fleming Island High School consistently ranks in the top 50 schools in the state. In 2011, 8 National Merit Scholarship Finalists graduated, more than the most prestigious private school in Jacksonville.
Shopping and restaurants are right on the Island. Here is a partial list of our convenient shopping: Publix, Winn-Dixie, Target, Wal-Mart, Grassroots, Home Depot, Kohls, Justice, Kirkland’s, Michael’s, PetSmart, Walgreen’s and CVS. Restaurants include Chick-Fil-A, Steak n Shake, La Nopalera, Chile’s, Longhorn Steakhouse, O’Charleys, Moe’s, Panera, Mellow Mushroom, and Chicago Pizza.
Commute times vary depending on time of day, but average time to downtown Jacksonville is about 30 minutes, to NAS Jax is 15 minutes, Mandarin is 15 minutes, and St. Johns Town Center is about 25 minutes. You can be at the beach in 35-45 minutes, depending on which beach you are headed to. Downtown St. Augustine is about a 45 minute drive. The St. Augustine Outlet Mall is about 35 minutes. Major highways are also close – I-295 is 10 minutes and I-95 is 15 minutes.
Life on Fleming Island is a very relaxed, casual Florida lifestyle. There are many outdoor activities, clubs and sports for children and adults to participate in. There is also entertainment locally at Mellow Mushroom, Whitey’s Fish Camp and Mercury Moon.
