Orange Park borders Duval County to the North, Doctors Lake on the Southeast, and Brananfield Road to the Southwest. One of the early residents of the town of Orange Park was Zephaniah Kingsley and the area grew in the 1800s when tourists would flock to the healing waters of Green Cove Springs.
Robert M. Yerkes, Yale Psychology Professor, founded what was later to be known as the Yerkes Primate Institute in 1930 in the Town of Orange Park. Locals still talk about “The Monkey Farm.” The St. Johns Country Day School was founded in the 1950s by some of the Primate Institute Professors for their children’s education. In 1965, Emory University moved the Institute to Atlanta.
Orange Park has long been a ‘bedroom community’ to the Jacksonville area and is home to many military families stationed at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. There are 8,476 residents in the Town of Orange Park, not counting the unincorporated areas.
Notable Orange Park communities include the Club Continental, Holly Point, Orange Park Country Club (which includes Loch Rane), and the newer developments of Oakleaf Plantation and Eagle Landing.
Orange Park Country Club is a guard-gated community with a golf course, clubhouse, swimming and tennis. Loch Rane is inside the gate and offers larger lots with mature trees.
The Club Continental occupies the grounds of the former Palmolive Soap Company founder’s winter home. The heirs developed the property, turning the mansion into a private Club and Restaurant with hotel rooms, and have expanded to more hotel rooms, patio homes, condominiums, The River House private club, and the Winterbourne house for private parties. Club Continental members also enjoy pool and tennis, along with dining privileges in the restaurant.
On the West side of Orange Park, development has exploded with the popular Oakleaf Plantation and Eagle Landing communities. Both are Community Development Districts and offer first class amenities, including, super pools with water slides, clubhouses, tennis, fitness center and more. Eagle Landing is a golf course community and also has an indoor basketball court.
